Citizen Science Crew Inc (CSC) is a volunteer‑run community organisation based at Daangean – Devilbend Natural Features Reserve on the Mornington Peninsula. We welcome people of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels who share a passion for nature, learning, and hands‑on conservation. Whether you’re brand new to the bush or a seasoned field ecologist, there’s a place for you in the Crew.
Our mission is simple: to provide practical, field‑based learning experiences that connect people with nature while restoring and protecting the biodiversity of Daangean.
Working in partnership with Parks Victoria, Melbourne Water, Bunurong Land Council, local community groups, and passionate individuals, we focus on the below projects.

Projects
Remnant Rescue – Habitat Restoration
Our Remnant Rescue project focuses on restoring large areas of degraded habitat across Daangean. In 2025, volunteers achieved an incredible milestone — transforming around 80 acres through the removal of invasive pines, Boneseed, and Sweet Pittosporum. This work is helping native species return and strengthening the ecological health of the reserve. The project continues to grow through strong partnerships with Melbourne Water, Parks Victoria, and local community groups.

Turtle Nest Protection Program
Each year, CSC volunteers work to protect nesting sites for freshwater turtles, helping to reduce predation by foxes and improve breeding success. This season saw a record number of nests protected, thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the guidance of our Field Officer. The program also provides valuable data for long‑term monitoring and supports broader biodiversity outcomes across the reserve.

Grassland Restoration & Hydrology Improvement
CSC is working to restore native grassland ecosystems and improve hydrology in key areas of the reserve. This includes weed control, seed collection, water flow improvements, and monitoring of regenerating sites. The discovery of the endangered Swamp Everlasting and ongoing sightings of threatened species highlight the ecological importance of this work. Future priorities include expanding catchment drain improvements and supporting Southern Toadlet habitat works.

Southern Toadlet Habitat Support
Following the exciting discovery of another population of endangered Southern Toadlets, CSC is now supporting habitat improvement works to help protect and expand this species’ range. Draft plans have been developed and reviewed, with on‑ground works scheduled to begin soon. This project is a powerful example of how community‑led conservation can make a real difference for threatened species

Community Education & School Ambassador Program
CSC is committed to inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. Through our School Ambassador program, students learn about biodiversity, conservation, and citizen science through hands‑on activities at Daangean. Highlights last year included a whale‑watching morning, wildlife monitoring sessions, and collaborative learning with Bunurong’s Balit Biik Rangers. One volunteer even gained employment as a direct result of their CSC experience — a testament to the program’s impact.
