GENERAL WEED INFORMATION
Weeds are a major threat to remnant vegetation and the fauna that rely on locally native plants for survival. Weed invasion is responsible for the loss of many species of plants and animals from areas across Australia, including the Mornington Peninsula. Weeds also impact on waterways, stock, crops, tourism.
The Mornington Peninsula Shire has produced the Mornington Peninsula Weed Guide with general advice regarding common local weed species.
The Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network regularly conducts field days and workshops which serve to assist landholders to identify and learn best practice techniques to treat weeds on private property. SPOTLIGHT ON KARAMU
Karamu is an invasive weed from New Zealand which is incredibly invasive in the Main Ridge, Red Hill and Flinders areas. It can be easily confused with Muttonwood, which is a relatively rare, indigenous plant. Download our Karamu Lookalikes Brochure for more information and be sure you’re certain before you start removing Karamu plants. Main Creek Catchment Landcare has also produced an informative video with tips on telling the difference between Karamu and Indigenous species and advice on controlling small and large infestations.

The Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network Weed Calendar is now available FREE to all current and future Mornington Peninsula Landcare members. It shows control methods and timing for over 30 of our most common environmental weeds. Available at your next Landcare event. The calendar can also be purchased by non-members for $15. Production of the Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network Weed Calendar was supported by the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority through the National Landcare Program funding.
BUSHLAND RESTORATION SPECIALISTS
Weed control in remnant vegetation should always be conducted by a skilled an experienced bushland regeneration specialist. Bushland regeneration contractors have a different skill set to landscape gardeners and farm hands, having in-depth knowledge of indigenous plant species and using suitable techniques for the sensitive removal of weeds in bushland settings.
